A Culturally led
way forward

The leadership within the Girringun Aboriginal Corporation recognises that we as a people
have arrived at a moment in our journey where
we are now encountering unprecedented
challenges to our stability and unity as a people.
Process Unite is our call to action.
Call to Action

Originally all the tribes worked together as one organisation based upon strong cultural knowledge and wisdom. The boundaries were agreed upon by the Elders who led with strong principles – relying on history and culture – not money. Rules were maintained
and adhered to, but remained unwritten.

The need to return to strong original cultural foundations.
Governance has bought about major changes in the way the nine Tribal Groups of Girringun fit and work together. The Groups have become fractured trying to adjust. Process Unite addresses the need to re-visit our culture and history and to learn from our Elders
in order to progress into the future.
Our Foundations

Our Lands, Our Rights
The traditional country of these groups encompasses land around North Maria Creek, South, North to Ravenshoe and Herberton, South to include country to the East of Einsleigh, and South West to Greenvale.
The offshore Islands and waters surrounding Hinchinbrook, Gould, Brooke, Family and Dunk Islands are also included in this area.
Land + Rights

Our Treaties
A treaty recognises Indigenous people’s history and prior occupation of their land, as well as the injustices many have endured. They also offer a platform for addressing those injustices and help to establish a path forward based upon mutual goals, rather than ones imposed upon Indigenous people. To stand in Unity, we will affirm our mutual respect through Regional Inter-tribal treaties. A step toward
collective healing and greater cohesion.

Story

Our Story
“In 1994 ‘Girringun’ was a Reference Group. When Family Services pulled out it fell to us to look after the people. Meetings were held at member’s houses and the local hall. The name ‘Girringun’ was decided on. We stood where David Attenborough named the country and renamed it ‘Girringun’. We have lost a few Elders along the way. We bought this place – the Art Centre was a vacant lot – now we are looking for a bigger place! We cant fit everyone in! It’s amazing to see the way things have grown."
